About Sergey Khodorkovskiy

Sergey Khodorkovskiy is one of the leading Russian icon art experts in the world. Born in a family of antique dealers in Moscow, he has been surrounded by antique Russian icons for most of his life. His love and deep appreciation for religious icon art, paired with extensive knowledge of the subject and many years of experience, have made him a recognized expert in the field, whose opinion is highly regarded by art and culture institutions both in Russia and abroad. In particular, Sergey Khodorkovskiy serves as an icon expert at the world’s premier art and antiques fair TEFAF Maastricht, collaborates with the Museum of the Russian Icon in Moscow, and works on a range of projects with collectors and art business professionals. One such project is the Russian Icon Book that contains detailed descriptions of many rare and unique Russian icons from private collections. 

Sergey Khodorkovskiy is a passionate collector himself. His valuable collection features many exceptional pieces of Russian icon art, including original 17th-century icons of “The Resurrection of Lazarus” and “Virgin Hodegetria” that depicts the Mother of God with Christ Child wearing unusual garments. Among other highlights of Sergey Khodorkovskiy’s collection are icons of “The Apparition of the Mother of God to St. Sergius,” “Archangels Gabriel and Michael,” and “The Ascension of Our Lord.”

The mentioned above Russian Icon Book is a collaborative project between Russian Icon and the Museum of the Russian Icon in Moscow. It represents a catalog of antique Russian icons painted in Palekh, Mstyora, Yaroslavl, and other famous iconographic regions of the Russian Empire. Each of the featured icons was studied, evaluated, and described by an expert team of art historians and museum specialists, including Sergey Khodorkovskiy whose contribution to the project is invaluable.
